In October 1952, the East China Institute of Chemical Technology was established with approval from the central government. It was the first specialized chemical institute in China, formed through the merger of the chemistry departments of several institutions, including Jiao Tong University, Aurora University, Utopia University, Soochow University, and Jiangnan University.
